Ex-Nyali MP slams leaders over floods in Mombasa County

Former Nyali MP and Mombasa businessman Hezrone Awiti has criticised Mombasa’s leadership for its alleged failure to address the drainage crisis that has left large parts of the coastal county submerged.
Speaking from the flooded Beachmart in Nyali Sub-County, Awiti condemned the apparent silence of local leaders as residents struggle with severe flooding linked to poor drainage systems.
“It appears the entire Mombasa leadership has been bought into silence while the county sinks,” said Awiti.
“Just recently, I heard the governor claim that the flooding at Links Road is a national government problem, as it falls outside his jurisdiction. How can a whole governor sit and watch as the county chokes in crisis? This is unacceptable – it means he has no business being the governor of Mombasa.”
Awiti, who also leads the Vibrant Democratic Party (VDP), noted that the flooding has disrupted businesses across the country.
He recounted witnessing a tour vehicle break down at Links Road, leaving visitors stranded while his own car also got stuck.
“Even schools have been affected. I receive calls daily from locals pleading for intervention,” he added.
The crisis has intensified in recent weeks, with Nyali particularly hard-hit.
Rashid Gona, a resident of Beachmart, described the flooding as chronic.
Another resident, Vivian Otieno expressed concern over the safety of children and the risk of waterborne diseases. “Children can’t go to school. Roads have become rivers, and the stagnant water, filled with waste, poses a serious health risk,” Otieno said.
