Europa League: Why Son, Bentancur, Romero Missed Medals After Beating Manchester United
Tottenham Hotspur ended their trophy drought after they beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final on 21 May. However, some of their stars missed out on medals.

It was the first time the club had won any trophy in 17 years, with their last triumph coming in the League Cup way back in 2008. The last time they won a European Cup was in 1984.
It wasn't a classic final as the quality of both teams was laid bare. The two teams have languished in the bottom half of the Premier League table for the better part of the season, and it was clearly evident why.
Brennan Johnson's goal before half-time was enough to see Ange Postecoglou's side over the line. The goal was another scrappy affair as it came off Luke Shaw before Johnson had the faintest of touches to guide it past Andre Onana.
Manchester United were the dominant side in the second half, but could only craft a couple of meaningful chances. The best was a Rasmus Hojlund header, which Micky van de Ven acrobatically cleared off the goal line.
Spurs managed to wind down the clock to spark wild reactions in the white corner at San Mames stadium. Captain Heung-min Son cried freely as he finally won a trophy after being at the club for almost 10 years.
However, UEFA suffered an embarrassing moment after they ran out of gold medals for the winners. Yves Bissouma was the last player to get his medal from UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin.
Christian Romero, Rodrigo Bentancur and Son, who was at the back of the line as it is tradition, all missed out on a medal. Ceferin was spotted having a chat with Son, probably explaining why they didn't get one.

Son was therefore forced to hoist the trophy without a gold medal on his neck. Tottenham will, of course, get a few extras from UEFA to make sure everyone has something to commemorate the victory.
UEFA rules show that the winning team often get 50 medals to distribute as they see fit. It is still unclear how Ceferin ran out of the 50 medals in the major blunder.
Fans were surprised as Son and his teammates missed medals despite less than 50 players stepping on the podium.
Glenn Haven said,
"I count Son as the 34th in the queue to get a medal. There are supposed to be 50 medals for the winner. Not enough medals is an absolute disgrace by the Europa League. How can you be that short on such a big night? Somebody needs to be sacked, Aleksander Čeferin."
Robust Ruben said,
"They ran out of medals...again. UEFA never learns from their mistakes. I've seen this happen 3 times now. It's embarrassing, like making 50 medals at least for the winners. People wait their lifetime for such an event."
While Ryan Taylor said,
"Struggling to understand how UEFA have supposedly distributed 50 Europa League winners’ medals & Son Heung-min, Rodrigo Bentancur & Cristian Romero have still ended up without one…"
In a separate report, Harry Maguire confronted Christian Romero after the final whistle in the Europa League final.
The two had heated exchanges during the game, with Romero eventually coming out on top as Spurs won the trophy.
The World Cup-winning defender went to comfort Manchester United players after the game, but Maguire wasn't impressed.
