ESPN's PAUL BIANCARDI ON COLLEGE BASKETBALL RECRUITING
Recently, we had the chance to sit down with , ESPN’s National Director of Recruiting, to talk about the college basketball recruiting process. Coach Biancardi brings years of high-level experience, having coached at St. Louis, Ohio State, Boston College, and as the head coach at Wright State—where he was named Horizon League Coach of the Year in 2004.
Whether you’re a player dreaming of college hoops or a parent or coach trying to help a young athlete get there, this Q&A is packed with insights you won’t want to miss.
“They make two major mistakes,” says Biancardi.
“First, they rush the process and commit too early without doing enough research. Second, some play games with the process—leading programs on for attention.”
Translation: Stay grounded, do your homework, and be respectful to coaches.
“Parents often focus on the highest level or biggest-name schools, rather than what’s truly the best fit or opportunity for their child.”
PSB Co-Founder Logan Kosmalski echoes this in his blog “Bigger Isn’t Always Better.”
“Practice with the purpose to improve. Play to win. And above all, be a person of high character.”
“Character might not get you a scholarship,” he says, “but a lack of it will definitely prevent one.”
Improve Skills to Boost Basketball Recruiting Potential
Coaches are always drawn to players who show work ethic, team-first mentality, and leadership. Focus on fundamentals, decision-making, and consistency to stand out.
“Love and support them. Don’t try to coach them. Feed them right, hydrate them, and invest in their passion.”
Parents’ Role in the College Basketball Recruiting Process
Provide structure and encouragement. Create a stable environment that lets your child grow athletically and emotionally.
“No. The market will find you. But you do need to play outside your local area.”
In other words, exposure matters—but it doesn’t have to come from a high-profile brand.
“Find a coach who can teach and correct. Development matters more than hype.”
Look for AAU programs with experienced coaches and a clear commitment to player development—like the approach we take at Pro Skills Basketball.
“High school is a good time. But don’t go expecting to be discovered. Go to compete.”
It’s about gaining experience and measuring yourself against top competition.
“Rankings are just snapshots. They reflect productivity and potential, not guarantees.”
Each year, unranked players go on to become stars in college. Focus on your own journey.
“Make sure you’re getting advice from credible people. Know their background. This is a complex process—you need real expertise.”
Biancardi is launching a recruiting webinar soon. Follow him on Twitter for updates, or contact us and we’ll help get you connected.
