Erling Haaland signs new nine-and-a-half-year deal with Man City until 2034

Erling Haaland has signed a new nine-and-a-half-year contract to keep him at Manchester City until the summer of 2034.

Haaland's previous contract was due to expire in the summer of 2027 but he has now signed one of football's longest-ever deals that will see him turn 34 years old by the time it ends.

Signing in 2022, the Norway international scored 52 goals in all competitions to help the club in his first season - making City only the second club in English history to do so after Manchester United.

He scored a further 38 last season as City won a fourth consecutive league title, and has hit 21 in all competitions this season even as the club struggled domestically and in Europe.

A sign of loyalty from Haaland to City - but it comes with risks

This is one of the longest contracts in football history - worth over £200m across 10 seasons.

It's a sign of loyalty and commitment by Haaland to Manchester City, and the club to their star striker. But with that comes risks.

He'll be 34 by the time the contract ends in 2034 - can such supreme speed, strength and scoring instinct be maintained for so long consistently at the top level? For now, it's the clinical touch most coveted in football.

Contracts at Salzburg in Austria and Borussia Dortmund in Germany were previously cut short as he strategically decided to gradually make the step up before ending up at one of the world's richest clubs in 2022.

But the talk even on joining City was about the club being another leg on his career rather than being the ultimate destination.

They are one of the world's richest clubs but, for glamour, Real Madrid could be irresistible. Even if the briefings are that Haaland has no release clause as part of improved City terms.

For now, City can build the team around the Norwegian in a team that requires rebuilding as the four-times defending champions unusually languish in sixth place in the Premier League.

And struggles on the pitch coincide with the countdown to the verdict in a huge case brought by the Premier League for alleged financial misconduct that City have been contesting.

That outcome could be even more consequential in shaping City's future than being able to rely on Haaland's goals into the next decade.

Reflecting on his new deal, Haaland said: "I am really happy to have signed my new contract and to be able to look forward to spending even more time at this great club.

" is a special club, full of fantastic people with amazing supporters and it's the type of environment that helps bring the best out of everybody.

"I also want to thank Pep [Guardiola], his coaching staff, my teammates and everyone at the club as they have all helped me so much in the past couple of years. They have made this such a special place to be and now I am City no matter what.

"I want to keep developing, keep working to get better and look to do my best to try and help us achieve more success going forward."

A post on the club's X account read: "Erling's here to stay! We're thrilled to announce Erling Haaland has extended his contract at City to 2034".

Txiki Begiristain, the club's outgoing director of football, also said everyone at City "is absolutely delighted," adding "the fact he is signed for so long demonstrates our commitment to him as a player, and his love of this club".

It comes as City await the outcome of a hearing into by failing to provide accurate information across a nine-year spell, as well as subverting UEFA financial fair play rules.

City faces going back to the 2009-10 season. The club has always strongly denied wrongdoing.

The nine-and-a-half-year deal will expire in 2034 and is the longest contract out of all current Premier League players.

Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson's seven-year and eight-year deals for Chelsea will end in 2033.
