The teaser for the Malayalam-language actioner Empuraan, the highly anticipated second chapter in the Lucifer trilogy starring Mohanlal, has been rolled out and is reigniting excitement for the next installment of the record-breaking franchise.

Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, the film will expand the universe created in Lucifer with a darker, more intense narrative.

Set against the backdrop of war-torn Qaraqosh, Iraq, the 143-second teaser opens with the ominous phrase "Death to the Evil," followed by a voiceover from Lucifer featuring PK Ramdas (Sachin Khedekar) advising Priyadarshini (Manju Warrier).

The teaser offers a glimpse of the dust-covered black Ambassador car, a subtle yet symbolic nod to the absence of Mohanlal's enigmatic Stephen Nedumpally, aka Khureshi Ab’raam.

Reflecting on the Lucifer phenomenon during an earlier interview with Gulf News, Mohanlal described his character with an air of mystery: “There’s an emotional layer to Stephen Nedumpally that audiences will uncover gradually. He’s more than what meets the eye.”

That layered complexity, hinted at in the teaser, seems to be deepened in Empuraan.

Prithviraj, who returns as director, also emphasised during the earlier interview that Lucifer—and now Empuraan—is a film that defies categorisation.

“It is not possible to compartmentalize this story into a single genre. While the political backdrop is there, the story itself is about much more.”

As Empuraan gears up to continue Stephen Nedumpally’s saga, the teaser offers just enough intrigue and gravitas to keep its fans invested.

While Mohanlal is a beloved star in South India, his recent film 'Barroz', which he directed, did not take off as expected. A blockbuster like Empuran might just help stir things along.
