Each season of Dancing With The Stars brings new twists and turns that keep its fans on edge. Now that the reality TV series is gearing up for Season 34, it seems like the latest competition will be no exception.
Though only two celebrities have been confirmed for the cast so far—lovable wilderness expert Robert Irwin and social media influencer Alix Earle—there are rumors of a different twist that would be a huge first for the show. It seems that the producers of the show are

Those who are in charge of casting for the show were asked by Deadline if they were open to the possibility of pairing two men as a team for the upcoming season. One of the executive producers, Ryan O'Dowd, shared that he personally was quite receptive to the idea. Though he didn't outright confirm it, Ryan did explain that it was within the realm of possibility:
I would say we are constantly looking for ways to push the envelope and produce a show that reflects and represents society as a whole. So I wouldn’t rule it out. It’s something that we’re continuing to discuss.
The question stemmed from a Season 33 performance between two men: in the finale, pro dancers Derek Hough and Mark Ballas teamed up to perform a showstopping Argentinian tango for the audience.
Ryan explained that he'd been a huge fan of the dance number. "It’s great to dance like that in general, with the motivation behind it. Many people said to me they had no idea about the origins of the tango. And I had no idea it begin with two males. And so you’ve got an unbelievable performance, right?" he said.

In the aforementioned conversation with Deadline, he emphasized that the last thing they wanted to do was appear indifferent when it came to their process:
Indifference is our biggest enemy when it comes to casting. And I think we’re always talking amongst ourselves about how to book people who are part of the ongoing zeitgeist conversation.
Adhering to the zeitgeist might be how social media influencers like Alix Earle find themselves joining the competition, pulling from all different channels of fame to cater to as wide an audience base as possible.
