CANBY — A driver escaped unharmed before his vehicle broke through the ice on Del Clark Lake near Canby around 8:50 a.m. Sunday, according to a report from the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff's Office.
The driver was able to exit the truck safely and return to his group without suffering any injuries, the Sheriff's Office stated.
The vehicle has now settled in approximately 30 feet of water, and recovery efforts are being coordinated. Preliminary investigations suggest that the ice at the location of the incident had been compromised due to the recent warm weather.
The area where the vehicle fell through has been clearly marked with traffic cones to alert the public, according to the Sheriff's Office. Authorities remind everyone that no ice is ever completely safe and encourage extreme caution when venturing onto ice-covered lakes.
Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "West Central Tribune staff report." Often, the "West Central Tribune staff report" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
