Former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, is spearheading efforts to secure bail for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NPP, Divine Agorhom, confirmed this in an interview with Citi News, monitored by GhanaWeb, on Friday, May 30, 2025.
“If that is not the case, my understanding is that the council is considering legal avenues to vary the conditions. If all that fails, then we will have to pool resources and see what we can do to get him out.
“Not only His Excellency the Former Vice President, but all leading members, including our caucus in Parliament and the national leadership, are involved in finding a solution,” he stated.
Bernard Antwi Boasiako has been in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) since Tuesday, May 27, 2025, as investigations continue into allegations of fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.
Although he was granted bail on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, his legal team has not been able to secure bail set at GH¢50 million, resulting in his continued detention.
“It is not only His Excellency Dr Mahamudu Bawumia but every senior party member. We are hoping that EOCO itself will be able to vary the condition to be a bit more lenient so we can meet it,” he added.
