Double trouble. Mets lose lefty reliever pair for season

On the same day that Mets manager Carlos Mendoza revealed that DH Jesse Winker will be out 6-8 weeks with a grade two oblique strain, he also announced that left-handed pitchers A.J. Minter and Danny Young will undergo season-ending surgery.

Minter will have surgery to repair a torn lat next Monday and Young will have Tommy John Surgery.

On his ninth pitch of the inning against the Washington Nationals on April 26, a cutter that fell out of the strike zone for a ball, Minter pulled his elbow in, winching in pain. Mets trainers promptly visited Minter on the mound, and after a brief moment, the veteran reliever was headed back into the dugout, his head hanging as he left.

In 13 appearances, Minter was everything the Mets had hoped for when they poached him from the Atlanta Braves this winter. He’s allowed two earned runs over 11 innings (1.64 ERA) with 14 strikeouts and seven holds.

Minter, who is owed $11 million this season, can opt in for an additional $11 million next season with the Mets — and he likely will.

Just a little over an hour before the scheduled first pitch at Citi Field last Wednesday, the Mets announced that Young had been placed on the 15-day IL with a left elbow sprain. At the time, both Young and Mendoza revealed that he was having a difficult time recovering between outings.

Now, Young will have to wait approximately a calendar year before taking the field again.

After a rocky start to the season, Young finally settled into his role as a middle reliever. In 10 games this season, the left-hander has allowed four earned runs in 8 1/3 innings, a 4.32 ERA. His 1.39 fielding independent pitching (FIP), a stat like ERA that removes fielding from the equation, suggests he was much more effective than his ERA suggests.
