Springtime in Indiana means blooming flowers, warmer days and also tornadoes. Tornado season kicked off earlier this month and a viral video captured the moment a Gary resident and his son saved their family dog moments before the storm swept through and destroyed their backyard.

On March 19, a EF-1 strength tornado touched town in Gary, Indiana, bringing 110 mph winds to the city with more than 67,000 people, the National Weather Service confirmed.

Home security footage captured the close call of the father, Anthony Stanley, and his son. They rushed to bring their dog inside who was inside a kennel in their backyard, according to Storyful.

Stanley's Ring camera captured the save, as well as the aftermath of the winds destroying the kennel and an adjacent storage shed just "moments after my son got our puppy out of it."

The weather event followed a slate of tornadoes that battered parts of the Mississippi Valley and the South earlier this month. At least 40 people died and hundreds of structures were destroyed across Kansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas, Alabama and Missouri.

More severe weather and thunderstorms have occurred across Indiana since this incident, including a severe storm on Sunday that resulted in two fatalities and left thousands of Hoosiers without power.
