Devin Williams blows save, booed off the mound as Yankees fall to Blue Jays

NEW YORK – The chants of “We want (Luke) Weaver’’ began building as Yankees’ closer Devin Williams quickly encountered more ninth inning trouble.

In the span of three batters, Williams had turned a one-run lead into a deficit – a turn of events that prompted Yankees fans to loudly boo him off the mound.

All three Toronto Blue Jays that faced Williams reached base, capped by Alejandro Kirk’s go-ahead two-run double.

Williams’ inherited runner also scored, leading the Blue Jays to a 4-2 win at Yankee Stadium, breaking a five-game Toronto losing streak.

Four weeks into the new season, the new Yankees’ closer – armed with his signature ‘Airbender’ changeup – has turned ninth inning leads into nervous moments for Yankees Universe.

And the crowd of 46,081 fans clearly prefers Luke Weaver – with a zero ERA over his first 11 games, with two saves in two chances – over Williams, with an 11.25 ERA in 10 appearances.

On to protect a 2-1 lead to start the ninth, Williams fell behind all three batters he faced, starting with George Springer’s sharp single to left on a 3-1 changeup.

Williams next hit Andres Gimenez with a 2-2 fastball before Kirk drove a 1-0 changeup over the head of swift center fielder Trent Grisham for a 3-2 lead.
