Born on January 6, 1969, in Allahabad, Justice Varma pursued his B Com (Honours) at Hansraj College of Delhi University, before obtaining an LLB from Rewa University in Madhya Pradesh. He enrolled as an advocate in 1992 and practised at the Allahabad High Court, specialising in constitutional, labour, industrial, corporate, and taxation laws.
His legal acumen saw him serve as the special counsel at the Allahabad High Court from 2006 and later as the chief standing counsel for the Uttar Pradesh government from 2012. In 2013, he was designated as a senior advocate before being elevated as an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court in 2014. He became a permanent judge in 2016.
Throughout his judicial career, Justice Varma has been part of several significant rulings. His bench set aside an arbitral award plus interest to media baron Kalanithi Maran.
He also stayed proceedings initiated by the Lokpal against Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader Shibu Soren based on BJP leader Nishikant Dubey's corruption complaint. Additionally, he played a role in quashing a tax reassessment petition filed by the Congress and overturning a Central Board of Direct Taxes order that denied tax exemption to Noida on its income from loans.
Justice Varma's spotless record in his 22-year-long illustrious career took a hit when a large pile of cash was allegedly unearthed from his residence earlier today after firefighters were called in to douse a blaze.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has to Allahabad High Court to the alleged cash recovery. "There is misinformation and rumours being spread regarding the incident at the residence of Justice Yashwant Varma," the Supreme Court said in a press note, emphasising that his transfer to the Allahabad High Court is an independent decision and not connected to the controversy.
The top court also reiterated that an in-house enquiry is being conducted following established procedures.
