Delhi Darwaza door comes off its hinges

Ahmedabad: The iconic Delhi Darwaza, one of the historic gates of the old city, suffered damage on Wednesday evening when one of its large wooden doors came off its hinges. No one was injured in the incident.

The heavy door came loose and slipped before resting against the structure's 18-foot inner arch. Delhi Darwaza is one of the key northern entrances to Ahmedabad's old Walled City. The gate faces in the direction of Delhi, hence its name. It features two flanking passages, each 8-feet wide. The gate is part of a 15th-century fortification built by Sultan Mahmud Begada in 1486–87, who expanded the original Walled City founded by Ahmed Shah I in 1411. This massive fortification once spanned nearly 10km, housing 12 gates, 189 bastions, and over 6,000 battlements.TNN
