Defender Ajayi leaves West Brom after six years, 177 games, 13 goals
Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi will leave West Bromwich Albion at the end of June, bringing his six-year spell at The Hawthorns to a close.
Ajayi’s departure was confirmed in the club’s official retained and released list following the conclusion of the 2024/2025 season. The 31-year-old centre-back made 177 appearances in all competitions for the Baggies, scoring 13 goals and recording three assists.
Ajayi joined West Brom from Rotherham United in 2019 and became a regular starter, helping the team secure promotion to the Premier League in his first season. Among his standout moments was his equalising header against Liverpool at Anfield in the 2020/21 Premier League campaign—his first top-flight goal.
However, his final season was hampered by injuries. A hamstring issue sustained in October sidelined him for several months. He made a brief return late in the season, featuring for just 37 minutes in a single appearance, after missing 29 Championship matches.
West Brom acknowledged Ajayi’s contributions in a statement:
“Defender Semi Ajayi will be leaving the club at the end of June. Internationals Ajayi and Diangana joined in the summer of 2019 and played instrumental roles in helping the Baggies achieve automatic promotion to the Premier League in their maiden terms at The Hawthorns.”
Ajayi now becomes a free agent, with his next destination yet to be confirmed.
