Deer dies of exhaustion after being 'chased by public' on Cleethorpes beach | ITV News Calendar

A deer has died after it was chased by people on a beach in Cleethorpes, an animal welfare group has said.

Four to five deers were spotted on the beach, which the group says is not uncommon because of surrounding grassy areas that offer natural food sources.

Members of the public were seen chasing the deer which caused the animal "unnecessary stress", leading to panic and exhaustion.

The wildlife rescue said it is unsure whether the people were trying to help.

One of the animals was recovered and received emergency care at East Lincs Emergency Vets, but despite best efforts, it passed away.

In a post shared on social media, the charity said:

"Let’s all work together to ensure Cleethorpes Beach remains a safe and peaceful place — for wildlife and people alike.

"A heartfelt thank you to East Lincs Emergency Vets and the fishermen who helped give this deer a chance after her ordeal. It was a devastating end and one that could've been avoided."

It added: "Deer are extremely sensitive animals and can suffer from post-capture myopathy — a condition triggered by extreme stress that can, unfortunately, be fatal."

The has also urged members of the public to avoid interacting with deer on the beach, due to the sensitivity of the specie.

Deer are capable swimmers and do not require intervention, unless a deer becomes trapped or stuck.
