The Chief Executive Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Area (AMA), Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has reaffirmed his commitment to keep the city’s roads clean and safe by enforcing discipline on the streets.

Addressing the media in Accra on Tuesday May 20, 2025, he emphasised that his leadership is rooted in action, not on empty promises.

“I don't make promises and not stand by them (sic). Whatever I say, I do it. This is not a nine-day wonder, we are on the streets to make sure the roads are clear," he remarked.

The decongestion exercise is being undertaken by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in collaboration with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA).

It forms part of broader efforts to address traffic congestion, enforce city by-laws, and improve sanitation in key areas in Accra.

The exercise is expected to remove unauthorised structures, enhance pedestrian movement, improve traffic flow and create a more efficient and accessible environment for economic activities.

The first phase of the exercise targets areas surrounding the AMA Head Office, including Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and Opera Square through to Adabraka.

Ahead of the exercise, Michael Kpakpo Allotey met with some hawkers at the Central Business District to inform them about the exercise and also seek their cooperation to restore order and improve sanitation in line with President John Dramani Mahama’s urban renewal vision.

He further explained that the exercise is not a punitive measure, but a strategic step towards transforming the city.
