AMA begins decongestion exercise in Accra's Central Business District
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has begun a decongestion exercise in the Central Business District (CBD) and other key parts of the capital city with the operation expected to extend to the Korle Klottey Municipality later today.
In the early hours of Tuesday, May 20, 2025, AMA task force, assisted by the Ghana Police Service, carried out a joint operation to dismantle makeshift stalls, unauthorised kiosks and remove vendors who have taken over pavements and other prohibited areas of the Central Business District.
The exercise is expected to clear unauthorised structures, enhance pedestrian movement and improve traffic flow.
It is also aimed at creating a more efficient and accessible environment for economic activities.
The first phase of the exercise focused on areas around the AMA Head Office including Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue and Opera Square through to Adabraka.
This is not the first time city authorities have embarked on a decongestion exercise at the CBD of Accra.
However, the affected traders always return to the pavements to conduct their business, weeks after the exercise.
