Death Toll Rises To Over 150 In Niger State Flood Disaster As Rescue Efforts Continue | Sahara Reporters

The devastating flood which struck the Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State has resulted in the loss of over 150 lives, with more than 100 people still reported missing.

SaharaReporters had reported that the disaster occurred on Wednesday night, May 28, 2025, after a torrential rainfall that lasted several hours, causing floodwaters to surge and submerge homes.
The floodwaters swept through the community, catching residents off guard and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. According to eyewitnesses, 17 members of one household, including children, women, and men, were swept away by the floodwaters.
Over 50 residential buildings and their occupants were submerged and swept away, leaving thousands of people without shelter.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed the death toll and said it is working around the clock to assist those affected.
In collaboration with the Nigerian Armed Forces and the Niger State Government, NEMA has provided food and non-food items, including rice, blankets, and mats, to support victims.
President Bola Tinubu has also directed NEMA and security agencies to step up ongoing rescue and relief efforts in the affected areas.
The Niger State Deputy Governor, Yakubu Garba, visited Mokwa to assess the situation and provide support to the victims.
The Nigeria Governors' Forum (NGF) also commiserated with the victims and expressed solidarity with the government and people of Niger State.
The Federal Government has urged residents in the affected communities to cooperate fully with emergency personnel and comply with evacuation instructions.
The collapse of the Mokwa Bridge linking the North and Southwest regions has stranded thousands of motorists and passengers.
As the rescue and relief efforts continue, the people of Niger State and the nation at large mourn the loss of lives in this devastating disaster.
