Wonderful dance theatre news is that bookings are open for the South African leg of Dance Intersect 2025, which is happening in Cape Town with Fragmented Landscape, at Artscape on October 2, 3 and 4 (four performances). Fragmented Landscape is being conceptualised and developed from this month, May 2025 in the Netherlands in a two-month residency, which will culminate an In Process performance in Utrecht. It will then be staged in its first iteration in Rwanda at Ubumuntu Arts Festival 2025 in Kigali, together with workshops and cross-cultural exchanges. After Kigali, the full production will be presented in Cape Town – a world premiere of the completed work. ACDC Shifting Perspectives outreach initiative will take place in tandem with the season of Fragmented Landscape, fostering connections with Cape Town’s dance community through workshops and collaborative sessions.  Read on for more about Fragmented Landscape and Dance Intersect 2025:

Fragmented Landscape is a co-production with DOX (Utrecht), performed by a dynamic ensemble of South African and international dancers under the direction of Brazilian Dutch choreographer Anderson Carvalho, who heads up Anderson Carvalho Dance & Choreography (ACDC). ACDC is a company based in the Netherlands, which works seasonally, on a project to project basis.

Dance Intersect 2025’s Fragmented Landscape is presented by ACDC and is produced by Elvis Sibeko Studios in association with Artscape Theatre. The season of Fragmented Landscape in Cape Town has been made possible with generous support from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tristan Finance, and the Embassy of Spain in South Africa.

For Dance Intersect 2025, an open call was put out internationally, inviting dancers to apply for a multi-national season which includes Utrecht, Netherlands and Cape Town, South Africa.

This year’s programme features an exciting lineup of international collaborations, bringing together established and emerging choreographers from South Africa and beyond. The highlight is the world premiere of Fragmented Landscape

The International line-up for Fragmented Landscape at Artscape in Cape Town, will be announced in July 2025 but bookings are open. An Early Bird Special applies until May 31, 2025.

The project kicks off this month, May 2025 with a two-month residency (May–June) at DOX in Utrecht, Netherlands. In Utrecht, two South African dancers are collaborating with European artists in an immersive creative process. They are developing Fragmented Landscape through shared exploration. The residency will culminate in an “In Process” performance at Theatre Kikker (Utrecht) on July 2, 2025, offering audiences a first glimpse of the work-in-progress.

From the Netherlands, the dancers will take the production to the Ubumuntu Arts Festival 2025 in Kigali, Rwanda, where they will perform and engage with local artists through an outreach programme, fostering cross-cultural exchange.

In July, the ensemble travels to Cape Town to further refine Fragmented Landscape, ahead of its full premiere at Artscape Theatre on October 2–4, 2025. This year, Dance Intersect 2025 expands its ‘Shifting Perspectives’ outreach initiative, deepening connections with Cape Town’s dance community through workshops and collaborative sessions.
