CUTS International considers legal action against PURC over new electricity tariffs

PURC has been called out for consistently approving tariff hikes

CUTS International has revealed plans to take legal action against the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) over its recent approval of new electricity tariffs.

The organisation argues that the regulator has failed to hold the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) accountable for its persistent inefficiencies.

This follows PURC’s announcement of a 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs across all customer groups, effective Tuesday, July 1, 2025. Notably, water tariffs remain unchanged.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News, Appiah Kusi Adomako, West Africa Regional Director of CUTS International, criticised PURC for consistently approving tariff hikes despite ECG’s ongoing technical and commercial losses.

“As an organisation, we plan to go to court to seek an injunction against PURC, preventing them from approving further tariffs for ECG until the company addresses the inefficiencies within the power sector,” he said.

Adomako argued that the Commission appears more interested in shifting the financial burden onto consumers rather than addressing ECG’s systemic inefficiencies.

He added that PURC continues to increase tariffs without compelling ECG to reduce its losses, a situation which could warrant legal action to halt future tariff adjustments.
