Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has disclosed that the state is leveraging the potential from the vast water bodies available in the state to boost local economy.
He stated this in Abuja over the weekend during the World Hydrography Day 2025 commemoration, with the theme, “Seabed Mapping: Enabling Ocean Action”.
Represented by his deputy, Dr Peter Odey, Otu said this year’s theme resonates deeply with its commitment to leveraging hydrographic science for sustainable maritime development, security, and economic growth.
He said, “As a coastal state, Cross River recognises the indispensable value of accurate seabed mapping in unlocking the vast potential of our blue economy.”
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to drive economic growth using hydrography.
He emphasised the transformative potential of hydrography in regional development, especially for coastal states like Cross River.
Describing Bakassi Deep Sea Port as a landmark initiative of the state government, the governor commended the Nigerian Navy and the National Hydrographic Agency (NHA) for their role in the recent survey of the port.
“We are particularly grateful for the recent conduct of the survey, a landmark initiative that underscores the importance of precise hydrographic data in driving infrastructural development and regional trade,” he said.
He said the effort aligns with the vision to position Cross River as a hub for maritime excellence and economic transformation.
“We’re ready to collaborate with federal agencies, private sector players, and international partners to support sustainable marine development, climate resilience, and equitable access to ocean resources in our state,” he stressed.
Speaking earlier at the summit, Chief Hydrographer of the Federation/Chief Executive Officer National Hydrographic Agency, Rear Admiral Ayo Olugbode, highlighted the growing significance of hydrography in national development, policy-making, and climate resilience.
