A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Calabar, Cross River State, has ordered that Inspector Effiong Bassey be held at the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Afokang, Calabar South.

On Sunday morning, Inspector Bassey opened fire on traders, customers, and other road users near the Atakpa Divisional Headquarters, resulting in the death of a woman named Ijeoma Wilson and injuries to several others.

Superintendent Otu Ubangah, who heads the Legal Department of the Cross River State Police Command, submitted an ex parte motion to the court seeking to remand the Inspector while awaiting legal advice from the State Attorney General. Superintendent Ubangah supported his request with a six-paragraph affidavit and a written statement.

In ruling on Case Number MC/199/25, Chief Magistrate Mercy Toney Ene, presiding over Court 1 on Moore Road, Calabar, adjourned the case to 14th April 2025 for a report from the State Department for Public Prosecution (DPP).

She ordered that Inspector Bassey remain in custody until legal guidance is received from the Attorney General of Cross River State.
