Court Nullifies Obasa's Removal as Lagos Assembly Speaker

The Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has delivered a significant verdict, declaring the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly illegal, unconstitutional, null, and void. The judgment, delivered on Wednesday, invalidates all proceedings and resolutions made by the House of Assembly on January 13, 2025, the day Obasa was initially ousted from office.
Obasa, who was reinstated in March following intervention from key political figures, including President Bola Tinubu, a former governor of the state, had filed a lawsuit challenging his removal. The suit named the House of Assembly and Mojisola Meranda, who was appointed Speaker after Obasa's removal, as defendants. This legal victory reinforces Obasa's reinstatement, providing a legal foundation for the political intervention that led to his return.
The presiding judge, Yetunde Pinheiro, specifically nullified the proceedings and resolutions of the lawmakers from January 13, 2025, emphasizing that due process was not followed in Obasa's impeachment. Obasa's initial removal stemmed from allegations of financial misappropriation and abuse of office, which he vehemently denied upon his return to Nigeria, asserting the illegality of the lawmakers' actions and prompting him to seek legal recourse.
The political crisis that ensued following Obasa's removal led to interventions from prominent figures within the All Progressives Congress (APC), including former governors Bisi Akande of Osun and Olusegun Osoba of Ogun. President Bola Tinubu also reportedly intervened, advocating for Obasa's reinstatement based on the principle that due process had not been observed, potentially setting a negative precedent.
At one point, the lawmakers were summoned to the presidential villa in Abuja for a closed-door meeting with the President. Following these interventions, Mojisola Meranda stepped down as Speaker on March 3, after serving 49 days in office. Obasa was subsequently renominated and re-elected by the members of the House.
Prior to the impeachment saga, Obasa had expressed his ambition to become governor of Lagos State, asserting his competence and qualifications for the role. This recent court ruling marks a significant chapter in the political landscape of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
