Council poll: Crisis rocks FCT APC over alleged imposition of delegates

Published 6 hours ago2 minute read

The last is yet to be heard of the crisis rocking the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the six area councils primaries billed to hold on Wednesday.

The Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Hon. Zephaniah Jisalo, who met with stakeholders of the party in the FCT on Monday, resolved to meet with the National Chairman of the party, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to address issues relating to the conduct of the delegates elections in 62 wards fraught with irregularities in breach of the party constitution.

At the parley, which lasted for over three hours, stakeholders of the party, including executive members from the Area councils of the FCT, roundly claimed that the delegates’ elections were not only fraught with violence and irregularities, but were characterised by imposition of delegates.

The stakeholders fingered a high-level member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who is a close associate of the FCT Minister, Hon. Nyesom Wike, for the irregularities that marred the delegates’ elections.

The minister, who assured that he would not compromise his position as leader of the party in the FCT, promised to interface with Ganduje to address the anomaly during the delegates’ elections.

Blaming the infighting among party stalwarts in the FCT for the development, he called on them to remain loyal to the party irrespective of their misgivings on the delegates’ elections.

The zonal secretary of the party in the North Central Zone, Alh Yakubu Adamu, expressed optimism that the crisis would be resolved before the primary election on Wednesday.

He noted, “You know, in an election like this, there must be a crisis, there must be issues, there must be people accepting what transpires, and some people will have issues on that. These are things we collated and discussed, and we are going to dispose of them by the special grace of God so that we face the election on Wednesday without any issues.

“Internally, we did not say 100 per cent, there are no elections. There are elections in a few places, and there are issues in a few places. These are issues we have collated, and we’re harmonising them. These are internal issues, and this is something that we do with the leadership of the party.”
