Cooper Flagg Is Getting Praised After Handshake Moment With Fellow Mavericks No. 1 Pick
The Cooper Flagg era in Dallas has begun after the Dallas Mavericks, as expected, made the former Duke Blue Devils star the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft on Wednesday night.
Flagg is widely regarded as the future franchise face of the Mavericks, who, just months ago, let go of superstar Luka Doncic via a trade with the Los Angeles Lakers.
After he was selected by the Mavericks, Flagg was greeted by former Dallas star Mark Aguirre, as shown in a video shared by the NBA on Instagram. The two exchanged a long handshake that got people’s attention online.
"Handshake was deep," said a fan on Instagram.
Another one said: "You see the handshake. Coop good ”
From a commenter: "Long [expletive] handshake lmao”
“That handshake with the elder said it all. Coop is already good to go! (We brothas know when we know! ),” a social media user posted.
Via a different commenter: “Aye the fact that Cooper did that handshake so fluently He been hanging around some brothas foreal lol.”
Said another: “Handshake looks like they've done it before lmao.”
Flagg and Aguirre share something in common besides their Dallas connection.
Like Flagg, Aguirre was also a top pick in the NBA, with the Mavericks taking him first overall in the 1981 NBA draft. Among other notable names in that draft class were Isiah Thomas, who would be a teammate later on by Aguirre with the Detroit Pistons, Larry Nance, Tom Chambers and Rolando Blackman.
Aguirre played for seven full seasons with the Mavericks where he averaged 24.9 points on 49.5 percent shooting from the field before he was traded to the Pistons.
Although widely considered as one of the best players ever in Mavs history, Aguirre never won a title with Dallas, which is something Flagg will look to achieve, as he starts the newest chapter of his basketball career.
