Controversy Surrounds Senator Natasha Akpoti's Suspension

The Nigerian Senate has been embroiled in controversy following the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the representative for Kogi Central. The suspension has ignited a firestorm of reactions, drawing condemnation from various quarters, including former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, human rights lawyer Femi Falana, and Anap Foundation founder Atedo Peterside.
Ezekwesili has penned an urgent letter to the Senate, led by Godswill Akpabio, proposing key actions to address the situation. Among her demands, she called for Senate President Godswill Akpabio to step aside for an independent investigation into allegations of sexual harassment. Ezekwesili also urged the National Assembly to reconsider gender bills and work towards protecting women’s rights in both the public and private sectors.
The suspension of Akpoti-Uduaghan stems from accusations that she violated the Senate Standing Rules 2023 (as amended). The senator had accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of making sexual advances toward her during a visit to his home in Akwa Ibom. The controversy arose after a dispute over Akpoti-Uduaghan’s seating arrangement in the Senate, which escalated into a heated exchange.
Ezekwesili, in her letter, outlined six fresh actions the Senate should take to address the controversies:
Meanwhile, during an International Women’s Day event held in the senate, Akpabio showcased his record of commitment to women’s rights. He recalled instances where he championed the cause of women, including his time as governor of Akwa Ibom state, where he appointed women to key positions. However, he challenged the gathering to ponder why women’s inclusion keeps falling in Nigeria.
Akpabio also addressed the case of Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, making it clear that he had no idea anything happened between them on 8th December 2023. He highlighted an incident involving Akpoti-Uduaghan and the minister of women affairs, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim, at the national assembly. According to Akpabio, Akpoti-Uduaghan walked the minister out of a senate hearing, causing her to leave in tears.
Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has also criticized the senate for the suspension of Akpoti-Uduaghan, warning that suspending legislators at the whims and caprices of leaders of the federal and state legislative houses must not be allowed to continue in Nigeria. He cited numerous precedents from high court and court of appeal rulings, dating back to 2010, when the house of representatives suspended Dino Melaye alongside 10 lawmakers.
Similarly, Anap Foundation founder Atedo Peterside has condemned the suspension of Akpoti-Uduaghan, describing it as disrespectful to her constituents. He said the action by the Senate was disturbing, pledging that he stands with the female lawmaker amid her ordeal.
The suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has brought to the fore issues of gender equality, sexual harassment, and the rights of legislators in Nigeria. The coming days will reveal how the Senate addresses these issues and restores public trust in the institution.
