Court Adjourns Natasha Akpoti's Suit Against Senate

The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the case of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, to March 25, 2025. This development follows Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan's earlier request to the court seeking an order to prevent the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges from investigating her.

The court had initially granted an order restraining the committee from proceeding with disciplinary actions against her. However, the Senate proceeded to suspend Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months, citing violations of its established rules.

During the court proceedings on Monday, counsels representing the first, second, and third defendants informed the court that they had not yet been formally served with the necessary processes. In response, Michael Numa (SAN), counsel for Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, asserted that all parties had indeed been served, providing affidavits of service as evidence.

Justice Obiora Egwatu, after reviewing the affidavits, verified that all defendants had been duly served. Subsequently, Kehinde Ogunwumiju, representing the third defendant, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, requested an adjournment to allow for the harmonization of all processes. This request was supported by other counsels, who emphasized that it would facilitate a more efficient and accelerated hearing during the next session.

Justice Egwatu granted the adjournment, setting the new date for March 25, 2025, and instructing that all pertinent processes be served to the involved parties before the specified date.

Reacting to the adjournment, Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Peter Nwaebonyi, expressed that it was "strange" for the court to intervene in the Senate's internal affairs. He defended the Senate's actions, stating that the upper chamber was simply responding to the court's call as a responsible and law-abiding institution.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan's suspension stemmed from allegations of "gross misconduct" following a contentious exchange with Senate President Godswill Akpabio on February 20 regarding seating arrangements. She later accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, a claim that the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions dismissed due to procedural irregularities. Neda Imaseun, the committee chairman, deemed the petition inadmissible because it was signed by the petitioner, violating Senate rules.
