Published 2 weeks ago4 minute read

The leading ladies of two massive Netflix hits are about to star in what's bound to be another one with . Actors , who starred alongside Robert De Niro in the hit show Zero Day, and , who starred opposite Taron Egerton in the movie Carry-On, are now starring together in Netflix's new film, but in a different way than you'd expect. Before all that, though, MovieWeb asked Britton if she would be interested in continuing Zero Day with a second season, considering it was such a mega-hit. The actor explained:

Of Zero Day? Yeah, you know, I think it'd be really interesting to do a sequel, because there's a lot more story to tell. And I don't know that anybody has thought about that, but I thinkI it'd be very cool. I would love it.

'Zero Day' is Robert De Niro's first leading TV role, and he delivers as a former U.S. president charged with investigating a massive cyberattack.

In The Life List, Britton plays Elizabeth Rose, a family's matriarch who passes away early in the film. She leaves a kind of existential scavenger hunt for her daughter, Alex (Carson), who is given DVDs after checking each item off her "life list." The DVDs contain wise, beautiful messages from her mother, and the scenes where Alex watches them are often the most emotional of the film. The wild thing about it is that Britton and Carson hadn't even really met before these poignant DVDs were recorded and before Carson's character gets to see them all.

"No, we didn't. And that's the thing that I still am so blown away by," said Britton, of giving their performances without having spent time together. "I really give Sofia so much credit, and also our director, Adam Brooks, so much credit for that, because there was such a real openness and passion for the story. And so when we got together, we just immediately wanted to know each other." Britton added:

"We wanted to create that relationship, and we both had things that were relative for us. You know, Sofia would tell me about her mom and her relationship with her mom. I told [her] about my son and my relationship with my son. [Sofia is] so amazingly open and generous, and we allowed ourselves to be vulnerable in that, so that we could really have all of those levels in the relationship we were establishing, even though we weren't really together on screen. And so it was a lot of fun to be able to do that."

Britton and filmmaker Jeffrey Reiner spoke to MovieWeb in separate interviews about their hit network series that's now getting a reboot.

Carson had spent a long time with the script and thinking about the characters, so it was especially powerful when she finally sat down to film her emotional reactions to what's supposed to be her mother from beyond the grave. She wasn't thinking of her own mother, though, but the Elizabeth Rose of the film.

"When I'm in a character, I think you try to disconnect, or at least I try to disconnect from my personal experiences when I'm on set," explained Carson. "So I was thinking of Elizabeth Rose and their relationship, and what it would feel like to be seeing my mom that I've just lost, talking to me on this screen, and all of the wildly profound emotions of that moment." Carson continued:

"Especially the first DVD that she sees, which Connie and Adam were so kind to surprise me — I didn't know I was going to have anyone on my screen. And then the cameras rolled, and I see Connie on a selfie video that she took herself before she had even started shooting. And it was so emotional, because for two years, I've been thinking of Elizabeth Rose and what it would be like the moment that I saw her for the first time."

Sofia Carson has been in a variety of projects, from popular Disney movie trilogies to movies on Netflix.

"Every time I saw a DVD, I told the whole crew not to roll, not to rehearse until the first take so you could get my genuine reaction to seeing her for the first time," added Carson. "And it was always just so alive. It was so beautiful to see her on that screen." It's beautiful for the audience as well. The Life List streams on Netflix beginning March 28, 2025.
