College Basketball Coach Fired Just 2 Days After Losing Conference Tournament
With the NCAA Tournament around the corner, teams that underperformed this season are officially making coaching changes.
One of the first big moves went down in the Summit League this Friday morning. Moments ago, ESPN's Jeff Borzello reported that Oral Roberts has parted ways with head coach Russell Springmann.
Springmann, 55, started his coaching career at Salisbury State in 1990. Roughly a decade later, he became an assistant coach at Texas. After holding that position from 2001-2015, he had a brief coaching stint at San Diego State.
In 2018, Paul Mills added Springmann to his staff at Oral Roberts. He was then replaced by Springmann after he accepted the Wichita State job.
"Coach Springmann has been committed to ORU for the past five seasons as an assistant and has been part and parcel to the success we have achieved. He has truly earned the chance to lead this program into the future - no one is more qualified or better positioned," Oral Roberts athletic director Tim Johnson said in March 2023. "His track record proves that he can recruit, coach, and develop young men to be the best they can be both on and off the court. I am confident ORU men's basketball will continue to be atop the Summit League with Coach Springmann, as we are focused on continuing to elevate the program to be national contenders."

Unfortunately for Springmann, he never really hit his stride at Oral Roberts. In two seasons with the Golden Eagles, he owned a 19-42 record. That's simply not going to cut it for a program that made the NCAA Tournament twice under Mills' leadership.
Oral Roberts' season ended on Wednesday with a 73-56 loss to Kansas City in the first round of the Summit League Tournament.
It'll be interesting to see who Oral Roberts targets as its head coach for the 2025-26 season.
