Cold weather advisory with subzero wind chills begins tonight for Lansing region
LANSING — Evening is near, and the chilly weather promises to worsen enough to warrant a cold weather advisory for the region from the National Weather Service.
The advisory signifying hazardous cold temperatures officially begins at midnight and promises to last until noon Wednesday because of temperatures and wind chill factors that combine to make the outdoors feel like nearly 20 degrees below zero for Greater Lansing and even colder in other parts of the state.
The NWS advisory promised "very cold wind chills as low as 23 below" for "portions of central, south central, southwest, and west central Michigan." The National Weather Service has warned that wind chills in parts of the Upper Peninsula this coming week could be as low as 44 below zero and people should take extra precautions to guard against frostbite, hypothermia and other dangers.
“The next few days are just going to be brutally cold,” said meteorologist Rebecca Hansen, who recommended bundling up and wearing multiple layers in Lansing, checking on others and limiting time outside for pets.
Snow expected Monday afternoon in the region could make driving dangerous.
“Any snow is going to make things really slick,” Hansen said. “You want to use caution.”
Hansen’s forecast for Greater Lansing includes wind chills dipping to 15 degrees below zero tonight and then wavering 10 to 15 degrees below zero during the day Monday and then about 20 degrees below zero Monday night.
Tuesday and Wednesday mornings could have wind chills of 20 degrees below zero as well, Hansen said.
Without wind chills, expected highs are 8 degrees on Monday and 5 degrees on Tuesday, and expected lows are 4 degrees below zero for both days.
The NWS Grand Rapids station has provided the following forecast for Monday, when people will want to recognize and honor both President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration and the legacy of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.: “Snow showers likely, mainly after 1pm. Mostly cloudy and cold, with a high near 8. Wind chill values as low as -14. West wind 7 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.”
Online, there’s no mention of snow for Tuesday.
Temperatures are supposed to hit a high of 17 degrees on Wednesday and highs of 24 on both Thursday and Friday and climb toward 30 degrees on Saturday.
