Clark was a national, regional champion
A former Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mr. Mike Igini, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, describing him as one of the colossal titans of Nigerian leadership.
In a heartfelt tribute, Igini hailed the late Ijaw leader as a national and regional champion who devoted his life to the pursuit of equity, justice, and federalism.
His statement reads: “With heavy hearts but gratitude to God for an exemplary life of distinguished leadership, we mourn the passing of our father, one of the colossal titans in the pantheon of leadership in the South-South geopolitical zone and Nigeria—our leader, mentor, and inspirational father of all, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark.”
Igini highlighted Clark’s pioneering role as a young advocate for a truly federal Nigeria, noting that his lifelong commitment to equity and justice had few equals.
“His unquenchable quest for an equitable and enabling country saw his presence as a pillar of leadership at major national conferences aimed at restoring the moral compass upon which Nigeria’s founding fathers established the federal system.
“When national leadership strayed from these foundational ideals, Papa Clark consistently raised his voice, urging a return to the principles of inclusion, equity, and unity in diversity.”
Igini emphasized that the best way to honor Chief Clark’s legacy is for the nation to recommit itself to these ideals.
“The greatest honour we can pay to his memory is to recommit ourselves as a nation to the values he stood for: inclusion, equity, justice, and fairness for all sections of Nigeria.”
Describing the late elder statesman’s distinguished career, Igini noted that Clark was not only a Federal Commissioner for Information but also a legal practitioner, politician, and the unchallenged leader and spokesperson for the South-South region.
“Despite the South-South’s immense contributions to the nation’s economy, Papa Clark never sought undue advantage—he simply demanded fairness for all and an equitable contribution to Nigeria’s sustainability. Even when others pursued narrow regional interests, justice and fairness remained his guiding principles.”
Reflecting on his personal experiences, Igini praised Clark’s unwavering support during his tenure at INEC, especially when he faced opposition for upholding the rule of law.
“In challenging moments, Papa stood by me. He publicly defended me when I was most vulnerable and consistently championed the cause of due process and fairness.”
Igini concluded by affirming that Clark’s legacy will endure in the hearts of those he inspired and prayed for God’s comfort for his family, the South-South region, and Nigeria.
“Papa did his best for the people of South-South and Nigeria, leaving behind a legacy of commitment to duty. He will forever remain in our hearts. May his brave soul find peaceful rest, and may God grant solace to his family and the nation in this time of immense loss.”
