City’s power utilities in SOS mode to meet rising demand amid heatwave

Mumbai: Power utilities on Tuesday said they are prepared to meet the increasing power demand amidst the heatwave alert for the region.
Adani Electricity

, which caters to over 31.5 lakh consumers in the suburbs, will primarily meet the demand through a combination of long-term and short-term contracts, an official said. This includes 1,300 MW from long-term contracts, renewable energy sources (solar, wind, and hybrid), 500MW from medium-term contracts, and 700MW of additional solar and wind power secured through short-term contracts. Additionally, it has arranged 300MW through a banking arrangement. Additional power requirement, if any, will be met through the short-term power market, the official added.
A Tata Power official said the peak demand from its eight lakh consumers is expected to touch 1,100MW compared to last year's 1,063MW. The company is ensuring sufficient power availability by having a versatile source portfolio of thermal, hydro, gas, solar, and wind and has secured 1,630 MW in terms of supply, he added.
The BEST is geared up to cater to a demand of 900MW compared to the normal demand of 700-800 MW and has signed short-term power purchase agreements for sourcing additional electricity. — Somit Sen
