CISLAC: improved oversight crucial to fighting corruption

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has stressed the need for improved oversight systems to fight corruption in the defence and security sector.
Speaking at a workshop organised in collaboration with Transparency International (TI) Defence and Security Programme, the Executive Director of CISLAC, Auwal Ibrahim Musa (Rafsanjani), explained that it was imperative to promote accountability and transparency in the sector.
He stated that despite increased budgetary allocations, the nation is still plagued with widespread insecurity and alleged corruption in the defence sector.
Musa berated lack of transparency in defence spending, adding that Nigeria’s performance on the Government Defence Integrity Index (GDI), which ranks the country “E” (Very High) for financial corruption risk and “F” (Critical) for procurement and operational transparency is discouraging.
