Despite a balanced scoring effort, with four players scoring in double-figures, the University of Rochester men's basketball team was edged 65-62 by the visiting University of Chicago in a University Athletic Association Sunday matchup at the Louis Alexander Palestra.

The Maroons (13-3, 4-1 UAA) rallied in the second half for their second straight victory, maintaining its spot tied atop the UAA standings at this point in the season. Rochester's loss moves the Yellowjackets record to 6-10 on the season and 0-5 in the conference.

Rochester led by as many as 12 points in the second half, but saw the Maroons go on an 17-4 run over the next five minutes to pull in front 52-51 with 6:39 remaining in the game.

A Tomiwa Adetosoye hoop-and-harm basket gave Rochester the lead right back, starting a 7-0 spurt that put the 'Jackets up six with four minutes left.

Stingy Chicago defense forced four Yellowjacket turnovers shortly after though, leading to nine straight Maroons points which put the visitors in front for good. Joe Berry had an and-one basket and later recorded a steal and slam dunk to put Chicago in front. Daniel Cochran finished the run with a layup inside, moving the score to 61-58 with 77 seconds left.

Misses at both ends of the floor allowed UR to get possession back with a chance to tie in the final minute, but a foul put UR's Bennett Kwiecinski at the line for one-and-one free throws with 20 seconds on the clock.

Kwiecinski made both and Rochester got a trap in the corner, but Chicago escaped and Cochran scored a fast break bucket to regain a 3-point cushion. He missed the and-one free throw though, keeping it a one possession game.

The Maroons fouled intentionally on the next 'Jacket possession and stayed up just one point after Adetosoye sank both free throws.

UR returned the favor, sending Thomas Kurowski to the line for two with 7.1 seconds on the clock and he made two, reaching the final score total.

On Rochester's final look with the ball, Chicago again fouled intentionally. A free throw miss with under three seconds left was grabbed by the Maroons, thwarting the last second chance.

It was a slow start for both teams on Sunday, with the score sitting at 4-0 Chicago after five minutes of play in the first half.

Rochester rattled off 10 straight points after that though, grabbing the lead midway through the period. Kwiecinski hit two of several turnaround jumpers in the paint to start the 'Jacket scoring and Nate Sock followed with a 3-pointer in the run.

After Savvas Gonatas drained a top-of-the-key 3-pointer to put Rochester up 13-6, Chicago was able to go on a 14-4 run over the next four minutes to edge in front 20-17. A Cochran old-fashioned 3-point play, and triples from Berry, Jackson Piotrowski and Kurowski highlighted Chicago's run.

Logan Jagodzinski sank a 3-pointer to stop the Chicago run and Rochester ended up holding a two-point lead at intermission, sitting up 26-24.

Early in the second half, an 8-0 burst, aided by 3-pointers from Corvin Oprea and Adetosoye boosted the Yellowjacket lead to seven.

The run later extended to the 11:18 mark of the period, with a Jagodzinski layup and free throw giving the Yellowjackets their biggest lead of the contest.

For the game, Kwiecinski led the Yellowjackets with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Sock and Adetosoye each added 12 points, while Jagodzinski was the fourth UR player in double-digit scoring with 10 points.

As a team, Rochester shot 50-percent from the field, making 24-of-48 shots, compared to the 43-percent mark (24-56) for the visiting Maroons. Chicago was able to settle in during the second half, committing just two turnovers following intermission, coming after a first half in which it turned the ball over seven times.

Berry led all players with 19 points for Chicago, adding 5 assists, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Cochran had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Kurowski finished with 13 points.

Rochester remains home next weekend for two more UAA contests, with Case Western Reserve University and Carnegie Mellon University coming to the Palestra. UR plays CWRU on Friday night before a matchup with CMU a week from today.
