There's nothing quite as fun as staring tried and tested fashion rules in the face—and then breaking them. Every now and then, it can be exciting to mismatch your bag and your shoes. It can a little thrilling to subvert the traditional seasonal colors. And, yes, it can also be fun to pair a strong business casual look with a pair of completely unexpected shoes. And Charlize Theron's latest surprising look is the perfect example.

The actress, who has been busy promoting her upcoming film The Old Guard 2, stepped out to do press in New York City on June 23. She kept her look (almost) entirely business-y, wearing a pale pink button-down with sharp navy trim, along with a pair of loose high-waisted trousers. She wore her blonde bob in a sleek center part, tucked behind her ears, and, other than a pair of gold hoops, kept her jewelry to a minimum.

So far, office-ready. However, it was her unexpected shoe choice that stole the show. Instead of opting for the obvious minimalist loafer, Theron spiced things up by slipping on a pair of black leather open-toe slides, adding a touch of beach-ready fun to the look.

But her open-toed sliders were so unexpected.

Theron certainly has a habit of subverting sartorial expectations by pairing seemingly incongruous items. Back in May, She wore a white shirt dress with an unexpected high-low hemline along with a pair of bold heeled black leather boots.

She also paired a plunging black blazer with a see-through black maxiskirt. And last year, she paired an office-ready blazer with nothing but a peekaboo bratwice.

Theron put it best herself when, in 2023, she claimed that she didn't really believe in fashion rules. “I feel like there shouldn’t be any faux pas,” she said to People. “I really feel like if you just go by how you feel and how much you love it, then it's not a faux pas.” She added, “I mean, there are a lot of dresses that I know people didn't like, but I'm like, I looked at myself in the mirror that night and I was feeling myself."
