Charlene Ruto calls for generational reconciliation amidst youth protests

Charlene Ruto, daughter of President William Ruto, has made a heartfelt call for generational reconciliation in Kenya, invoking Scripture to urge unity between the country’s youth and their elders.

In a post shared on her social media platforms, Charlene quoted Malachi 4:6, which reads: "And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers…” She accompanied the verse with the words "Generational reconciliation…Do we still have a God believing and God fearing generation?"

Her comments come at a time when Kenya is witnessing a rising wave of youth-led protests, largely driven by Gen Zs who have taken to the streets—and to social media—demanding accountability, reforms, and a more inclusive government.

Many of the demonstrators have expressed deep frustration with what they see as a political class disconnected from the needs and aspirations of the younger generation.

Charlene’s post has been interpreted as a call for dialogue and understanding between the older generation in power and the youth who feel left behind.

It hints at a yearning to bridge the widening gap in trust, values, and expectations that has come to define the current political moment in Kenya.

The statement comes after another one recently where he called for a truce between Kenya’s senior citizens and the country’s increasingly vocal Gen Z youth.

In a passionate statement released on June 20, Charlene placed part of the blame for the “endless and senseless conflict” on millennials, saying the generation has failed to play its rightful role as middle-ground mediators.

“We as the older brothers and sisters who understand both generations have failed to mediate for peaceful coexistence, provide leadership and clarity in tough times, and offer our young people guidance on alternatives that don’t necessarily lead to violent riots,” she said then.

She cautioned that the recent wave of anger and confrontation - fueled by violent protests, cyber bullying, and what she termed “rage hunting” and cancel culture - risked radicalizing young people and pushing the country into deeper instability.

“It’s time we embrace a generational ceasefire immediately,” she declared.

Instead of chaos and confrontation, she urged for a national shift toward civil, objective-driven solutions, including inter-generational dialogues, policy recommendations, and active lobbying for sensible reforms.
