Centre County under winter weather advisory starting early Sunday morning. What we know

Published 1 month ago2 minute read

A significant portion of central Pennsylvania — including part of Centre County — will be under a winter weather advisory starting 4 a.m. Sunday.

The National Weather Service issued the advisory Saturday afternoon, and it encompasses 16 counties. Only the southern part of Centre County, which includes State College, is part of the advisory.

It’s scheduled to end 10 p.m. Sunday.

According to the NWS, between 2 and 4 inches of snow is expected Sunday in the advisory area. In State College, specifically, the weather service called for 3 inches of snow between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday.

“Be prepared for slippery roads,” the NWS’ advisory read. “Slow down and use caution while driving. If you are going outside, watch your first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks and driveways. These surfaces could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury.”

The NWS issues winter advisories, watches and warnings throughout the season. Warnings are the most severe, followed by watches and then advisories. A winter weather advisory — such as the one that goes in effect Sunday in Centre County — simply asks for people to exercise caution because the wintry weather, which might be light, could cause slippery conditions. A warning lets people know heavy precipitation is expected and should cause significant impacts such as closed roads.

On Saturday morning, PennDOT also issued a news release to remind drivers of various road restrictions across the commonwealth that will go into effect 6 a.m. Sunday. “Please reduce speeds and exercise caution if you must travel during the storm,” it added.
