Cannes Film Festival Bans Nudity on the Red Carpet

The Cannes Film Festival has implemented strict dress code guidelines for the 2025 event, specifically targeting outfits that promote nudity or are excessively voluminous. This decision, according to festival organizers, is intended to uphold "good old-fashioned decency."

This move comes after incidents such as a topless demonstrator on the Cannes red carpet in 2022 and Bianca Censori's transparent dress at the Grammys red carpet, which pushed the boundaries of fashion and nudity. The festival aims to prevent similar occurrences by explicitly prohibiting full nudity on the red carpet, aligning with the event's institutional framework and French law.

The festival's organizers stated, “This year, the Cannes Film Festival has made explicit in its charter certain rules that have long been in effect. The aim is not to regulate attire per se, but to prohibit full nudity on the red carpet, in accordance with the institutional framework of the event and French law.”

In addition to the prohibition of nudity, the festival reserves the right to deny admission to individuals whose attire obstructs the movement of other guests or complicates seating arrangements. This measure ensures the smooth flow of the event and the comfort of all attendees.

The Cannes Film Festival has faced criticism for its traditionally stringent red carpet requirements, particularly the emphasis on ‘classy’ dressing and ‘elegant’ shoes. Fashion experts have pointed out that the expectation of ‘elegant outfits’ often translates to high heels for women, which some consider unfair. While low-top heels are now more acceptable—as long as they’re not sneakers—incidents like the indie producer turned away for wearing moccasins at the 2022 festival highlight the ongoing debate.
