April 10, 1941 – June 24, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Mary Jean (Carol) Cancilla (nee Ballantyne) on June 24th, 2025, at the Barrie Hospice, at the age of 84.

Carol was predeceased by her beloved husband, Charles Cancilla, and her twin brother, Cary Ballantyne. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her children: Lissa (Andrew), Mike, and Cathy; and her grandchildren, whose lives were forever brightened by her love, warmth, and unwavering support.

Carol also leaves behind her dear friends, loving nieces and nephews and extended family, all of whom she cherished deeply.

Before starting her family, Carol worked as a primary school teacher – a role that reflected her natural patience, warmth, and gentle guidance. She carried those same qualities into her life as a wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend.

A woman of quiet strength, faith and service, Carol was a devoted member of the Catholic Women’s League and a compassionate volunteer at the Barrie Hospice, where she later received the same gentle care she once gave to others.

She was an incredibly talented seamstress who made special outfits for the family. She loved painting and papier toile and was skilled in bowling, winning several trophies. She was often described as a strong, kind-hearted woman who didn’t shy away from speaking her mind and standing up for what she believed in. She fiercely advocated for her loved ones, and just as bravely for herself, teaching those around her the power of courage, loyalty and self-respect.

She was the heart of her home, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother whose love was felt in every corner of her well-tended household and garden with each warm meal. Her greatest joy was caring for her family. Family was at the centre of everything she did. She cherished birthdays, holidays and Sunday dinners – any chance to gather close with loved ones. Family outings and time spent in the company of her children and grandchildren, making crafts, listening, laughing, dancing, even riding a horse, and loving us with her whole heart. Her presence was as grounding as it was guiding.

Her legacy will live on in the values she passed down – in the strength of her voice, the warmth of her embrace and the joy she brought to every gathering.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie on September 20th, 2025 from 11-1 pm inside the lower lounge. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff at the Waterford Residence, Barrie Hospice, Dr. Dickson and the Palliative Care Team. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff at Hospice Simcoe for their compassionate support. In lieu of flowers, donations in Carol’s memory may be made to the Hospice Simcoe or a charity of choice. Online condolences and memories may be shared at www.steckleygooderham.com
