Can Eating Chia Seeds Be Dangerous? Understanding the Risk of Throat Blockage

Published 1 day ago3 minute read

Chia seeds are often celebrated as a superfood. They are packed with fibre, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants, making them a popular choice for health-conscious people. Many add them to smoothies, yoghurt, or salads, believing they support digestion and heart health. But while chia seeds are healthy for most, there is a hidden danger that many overlook. In rare cases, eating dry chia seeds and then drinking water can cause them to swell and block your throat. This can be so serious that it may land you in the hospital.

When you eat dry chia seeds and then drink water, the seeds can quickly absorb the liquid and expand inside your food pipe, or oesophagus. Dr Jaydeep Patel, DNB Gastroenterologist, Aadicura Hospitals, Vadodara, explains that chia seeds are highly absorbent. They can take in 10-12 times their weight in water. “If you swallow them dry, they start soaking up saliva and any fluids they encounter in your throat and digestive tract,” he said.

This rapid swelling can cause the seeds to clump together and form a thick, jelly-like mass. If this happens in your oesophagus, it can create a blockage, making it hard to swallow or even breathe. In some cases, as Dr Patel describes, people have needed emergency procedures like endoscopy to remove the blockage and restore normal swallowing.

He adds, “If chia seeds swell up in the oesophagus, you can have trouble swallowing or even breathing. That’s why it’s important to soak chia seeds for at least 30 minutes before eating them. This allows them to expand safely outside your body, reducing the risk.”

A study published in the journal Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology reported a similar case. A man developed a blockage in his oesophagus after eating dry chia seeds and then drinking water. The seeds expanded and formed a thick gel, making it impossible for him to swallow or breathe properly. The study’s authors warn that chia seeds should always be soaked before eating to avoid this risk.

Chia seeds are hydrophilic, meaning they attract and absorb water. One gram of chia seeds can absorb up to 10-12 grams of water. If this happens in your throat or food pipe, the seeds can swell quickly and cause a blockage. This is especially dangerous for people with swallowing problems or a history of oesophageal issues.

To enjoy the health benefits of chia seeds without risking your health, always soak them in water or another liquid for at least 30 minutes before eating. This allows the seeds to expand fully outside your body. You can add soaked chia seeds to smoothies, yoghurt, or oatmeal. Never eat dry chia seeds and then drink water right after. If you ever feel your throat tightening or have trouble swallowing after eating chia seeds, seek medical help immediately. Quick action can prevent serious complications.
