Can A McDonald's Large Fries & Coke Cure Migraines?

Published 4 hours ago2 minute read

The internet may have found its new favorite excuse for a McDonald’s run. And no, before you ask, it has nothing to do with the return of the Snack Wraps.

Dozens of TikTokers and Instagram users are hyping up a new migraine hack. According to a now-viral Instagram post by @realratedred, eating McDonald’s can cure migraines. This “hack”—aka the McMigraine (yes, really)—involves ordering a large Coke and a large fry to ease your crushing, can’t-get-out-of-bed kind of headache.

It sounds too good to be true, but it’s actually kind of legit. “Some say it’s the salt + caffeine combo that does the trick,” the post reads. “Salt from the fries may help restore sodium levels (linked to migraine triggers). Caffeine from the Coke can boost the effects of pain meds like ibuprofen.”

A neurologist even took to TikTok to co-sign the hack, confirming that it’s a known move in the migraine community. “A large Coke has about 80 milligrams of caffeine in it,” she says in the clip. “That right there is probably enough to stop your migraine right there. Also, McDonald’s is well known to have some of the saltiest fries around. And fries are carbs.”

Of course, this doesn’t mean you should be hitting the drive-thru every time your head starts to throb. This isn’t a long-term solution, and doctors say that everyone’s body reacts differently to salt and caffeine. Plus, relying on soda and fries as your only form of relief could lead to rebound headaches or other health issues over time.

Still, for the TikTok girlies (and honestly, anyone desperate for relief), this fast-food combo might be worth a shot. Is it a miracle cure? Ehh..no. Is it a fun excuse to grab fast food the next time your brain starts pounding? Absolutely. Just keep the Advil on hand, too.
