Street art in Milan dedicated to three Holocaust survivors - writer and poet Edith Bruck, Life Senator Liliana Segre and Sami Modiano - made by contemporary artist aleXsandro Palombo to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz has been vandalized, the artist said Monday.
"Repeatedly attacking artworks dedicated to Memory that portray Auschwitz survivors doesn't only bring infinite bitterness, but highlights how the value itself of democracy and of all our freedoms is in danger", said Palombo.
"Those who continue to remain indifferent when faced with these repeated anti-Semitic attacks are accomplices of this terrible drift", he added.
The artist listed in a statement all the murals that have been vandalized, including his first artwork portraying Bruck - 'Arbeit macht frei' - where a large blue Star of David was removed with paint from the Israeli flag while in his second work portraying Bruck, Segre, Modiano as well as Pope Francis, all the yellow Stars of David symbolizing exclusion and the Holocaust massacre were cancelled.
Last year, street art portraying Segre and Modiano called "Anti-Semitism, History Repeating" was removed.
Palombo recalled that the mural, located in Milan's Piazzale Loreto, was vandalized on November 11 with the Stars of David sprayed with paint and the face of the Life Senator disfigured.
