Prime Minister Modi urged BRICS nations to collaborate on responsible AI governance, balancing innovation with ethical considerations. He emphasized securing critical mineral supply chains and suggested a BRICS Science and Research repository to benefit the Global South. Modi also highlighted the importance of demand-driven projects for the New Development Bank and invited BRICS partners to India's upcoming AI Impact Summit.

has suggested that the BRICS should work for responsible AI - while looking into the concerns of AI governance and asked BRICS to ensure that the supply chain of critical minerals is secure and resilient.Addressing the session on "Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs and Artificial Intelligence” at the BRICS Summit on Sunday (Brazil time), the Prime Minister expressed that diversity and multipolarity were valued strengths of the BRICS.

He stated that at a time when the world order was under pressure and the global community facing uncertainty and challenges, the relevance of BRICS was evident.

He further added that BRICS could play an important role in shaping a multipolar world. In this regard, he offered four suggestions: one, the BRICS New Development Bank must follow demand driven principle and long-term sustainability for granting projects; two, the group consider setting up a Science and Research repository which could benefit the global south countries; three, focus must be given to make the supply chain of critical minerals secured and resilient; and, four, the group should work for responsible AI - while looking into the concerns of AI governance, it should also give equal importance to promoting innovation in the field.

“In the form of BRICS New Development Bank (NDB), we have offered a strong and credible alternative to support the development aspirations of countries in the Global South. While approving projects, the NDB must focus on demand-driven approaches, long-term financial sustainability, and healthy credit rating. Strengthening our internal systems will further enhance the credibility of our call for reformed multilateralism,” the PM suggested.

“Secondly, today the countries of the Global South have some special expectations and aspirations from BRICS. We can work together to fulfil them. For instance, the BRICS Agricultural Research Platform, established in India, is a valuable initiative to enhance collaboration in agricultural research. It can become a medium for sharing research and best practices in topics such as agri-biotech, precision farming, and climate change adaptation. We can also extend its benefits to countries in the Global South. Similarly, India has launched the ‘One Nation, One Subscription’ initiative to ensure nationwide access to academic journals. Similar efforts have been undertaken in other BRICS countries as well.” In a veiled message to fellow BRICS member China, the PM noted that it is important to ensure that no country uses critical minerals for its own selfish gain or as a weapon against others.“We believe that resolving concerns and encouraging innovation should be given equal importance in AI Governance. We must work together for Responsible AI. Global standards must be created that can verify the authenticity of digital content, so that we can identify the source of the content and maintain transparency and prevent misuse.”

The Prime Minister highlighted India’s initiatives in agri-biotech, digital education access and invited the BRICS partners to the “AI Impact Summit” that India will be hosting next year.
