Brad Pitt's $200M Thriller Is Conquering Streaming After Initial Failure That Scrapped Its Sequel Chances

Published 21 hours ago3 minute read

Brad Pitt appeared in 2024’s Wolfs, alongside close friend George Clooney, with Jon Watts writing and directing the action-thriller. According to reports, the movie was made for a massive budget of $200 million and dropped directly on Apple TV+, where it received lukewarm reactions.

Fast-forward, a few months later, and a film that seemingly had no takers, even with a strong initial buzz and plans for a sequel, is taking over streaming charts. Despite the sequel being scrapped, Pitt’s Wolfs is performing well on streaming, and here is everything you need to know about its resurgence.

Brad Pitt and George Clooney worked together on the commercially successful Ocean’s Eleven trilogy. As a result, the duo’s reunion for director Jon Watts’ action-thriller Wolfs was a highly anticipated affair, which initially failed to live up to expectations.

Wolfs was released on September 27, 2024, and received mostly mixed and outright lukewarm reactions after release. It currently holds a 67% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, which explains why the film practically had no takers when it first released on streaming.

Despite the negative reviews, Wolfs is now emerging as one of the most popular titles on Apple TV+. By October 2024, it was the most viewed movie in Apple TV+ history (via Variety), resulting in a modest 72% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, the movie continues to dominate the streaming charts and maintains a steady presence on the platform’s list of top 10 movies well into June 2025. As of June 22, 2025, Wolfs ranks fourth in the daily top 10 list, proving that the action-thriller has seen a resurgence almost eight months after it was released (via Flixpatrol).

Pitt and Clooney’s onscreen reunion is a prospect that could’ve produced some exciting box office figures. As a result, it isn’t surprising that Wolfs was initially planned to have a wide theatrical release. However, Apple pivoted to a streaming and limited theatrical release just weeks before its release (via Deadline).

Before the film’s release, the studio had also announced that Pitt and Clooney would return for a sequel, alongside director Jon Watts. Despite the announcement, Watts revealed that he did not write the movie with plans for a sequel (via Vanity Fair).

In November 2024, just a couple of months after the movie was released on Apple’s streaming platform, Watts confirmed he had decided not to move ahead with the sequel.

I wasn’t even told about it until less than a week before they announced it to the world. I was completely shocked and asked them to please not include the news that I was writing a sequel.

Watts made the above statement in an interview with Deadline, revealing that the studio’s decision to pivot away from a wide theatrical release for the movie led to a distrust between him and Apple.

The director, who also opted out of returning for MCU’s Spider-Man 4, added that his request not to announce the sequel plans beforehand was also ignored by the studio. As a result, he no longer trusted Apple as a creative partner and dismissed any plans for the potential sequel. What did you think of Wolfs? Would you have wanted to see a sequel?
