Bob Dylan Biopic 'A Complete Unknown' Gets Digital Streaming Date

A Complete Unknown—Timothée Chalamet’s Bob Dylan biopic that’s earned eight Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor for Chalamet and Best Director for James Mangold—is coming soon to digital streaming.

Rated R, A Complete Unknown was released in theaters nationwide on Dec. 25, 2024. In addition to its Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director, A Complete Unknown also earned nods for Best Supporting Actor for Edward Norton, Best Supporting Actress for Monica Barbaro, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Costumes and Best Sound.

According to Variety, A Complete Unknown is expected to arrive on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

The official logline for A Complete Unknown reads, “In 1961, unknown 19-year-old Bob Dylan (Chalamet) arrives in New York City with his guitar. He forges relationships with music icons of Greenwich Village on his meteoric rise, culminating in a groundbreaking performance that reverberates worldwide.”

Norton as Pete Seeger in A Complete Unknown, while Barbaro plays Joan Baez. The film also stars Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie and Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo—who is a representation of Dylan’s former real-life girlfriend Suze Rotolo.

When A Complete Unknown arrives on PVOD, it will be available on such digital platforms as Prime Video, AppleTV and Fandango at Home. Prime Video lists A Complete Unknown for $29.99 for pre-order, which is also the film’s purchase price.

Since digital rental prices typically run $5 less than purchase prices, viewers can expect to rent A Complete Unknown for $24.99 for a 48-hour period.

According to The Numbers, A Complete Unknown has earned nearly $69 million domestically and $27.8 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $96.8 million to date.

Per IMDb, A Complete Unknown had an estimated production budget of $65 million before prints and advertising costs.

Rotten Tomatoes critics collectively gave the film an 80% “fresh” rating based on 292 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, “Charged by Timothée Chalamet's electric performance, this ballad of Bob Dylan might not get under the enigmatic artist's skin but will make you feel like you've spent time in his company.”

Audiences, meanwhile, gave A Complete Unknown a 96% “fresh” rating on RT’s Popcornmeter based on 5,000-plus verified user ratings. RT’s audience summary reads, “Without ever falling out of tune, A Complete Unknown composes a gritty verse in the ballad of Bob Dylan’s life that’s uncannily interpreted by Timothée Chalamet.”

Co-written by James Mangold and Jay Cocks, A Complete Unknown is based on Elijah Wald’s book Dylan Goes Electric! Newport, Seeger, Dylan, and the Night That Split the Sixties.

Rated R, A Complete Unknown is still playing in theaters and will debut on PVOD on Feb. 25.
