Ethan Laird and Alfie May both got on the scoresheet, securing Birmingham’s 33rd league victory and 14th away win, breaking club and league records.

They can reach 111 points with a win in their final game against Cambridge United on Saturday afternoon.

Birmingham City boss Chris Davies said, per the club website: “As I’ve said to the players in there, this isn’t something that for a second you should take lightly or get on the bus and forget about it – it’s something truly special.

“For most points, yes, anyone in the EFL, but anyone in English football has ever got in a football season. That’s a lot of years of football, a lot of clubs starting off and finishing it with a certain amount of points but no one’s got more than 106.

“And to do it is an incredible achievement. I said to the players when they came that I wanted to do something special this season. I believed that we were going to go somewhere. I believed we were going do something, and I couldn’t have wished for it to have gone any better.”

“I have spoken to the players about the legacy we could leave this season and the mark we could make in the footballing world.

“I have been drumming it into them, to chase a record like this isn’t a club record, not something that people will brush over. Everyone will know in the next 24 hours what we have done.

“To achieve 108 points is truly special and a remarkable achievement. I said to the players just make sure you sit back, think about, reflect and understand what it takes to do that.

“Think how many football teams there have been, how many seasons there have been. And we are the team that have got the most points in the history of English football.

“I am so proud of them all. Not only have we broken the record but we have achieved it by having to play, I believe, more games in England or Scotland than anyone else.”

“Overall, there was a gulf. They have got far better players all over the pitch than most of us have got. You could see why they had won the league by 20 odd points.

“They are well organised, well coached, well disciplined. I predicted it five or six months ago they would win by 20 points and they have got record totals.

“They remind me of the really good Wolves side that was in the Championship a few years ago.

“Congratulations to Birmingham. It is a club I have a big fondness for. They are an excellent football team and we found it very difficult.

“In the first half, in particular, we didn’t make it very difficult for them. In the second we made a mistake but were better.”

🗣️ "We were beaten by a far better team on the night. They're head and shoulders the best team in the league."

Twitter users reacted as Birmingham City set a new EFL record for the most points in season with a win at Blackpool…

@jesbojb: 138 seasons of English professional league football and we have the most points and joint most wins by any team. What a fucking achievement. #BCFC

@timsenna: Thank you Chris Davies, Tom Wagner, Tom Brady for making us so proud to be blue after the last 10 years 💙 It’s truly a new dawn for this club and the whole city #bcfc

@YouBearsssssss: I don’t think we will realise the achievement this group of Players have done for Years..👏YES we spent millions and were expected to be promoted, Yes we are the Best Team BUT 108 points (Probably finish on 111..👀) is just phenomenal 😳😳 What a TEAM 😍💙 #BCFC

@1lee18750: Blues relegated a year ago, go with an untried young manager and bring in 17 new players, 7 of which were free or on loan then break record points and record wins for a season with a game still to play. We literally have had the season of our lives #BCFC

@Mrbluesguy23:
So.. summing it all up,
Last season was a circus
This season was a show. #bcfc

@PAN1F: Congratulations to #bcfc. It hurts to lose the record, but it was made to be broken, even if it’s taken nearly 20 years. We now have to survive and, against all the odds, get into the playoffs. And maybe that’s the real story of this season. #readingfc #SellBeforeWeDai

@J1875_: Lets not beat around the bush. 108 points at any level is immense. Chris Davies first ever managerial job and I feel people will overshadow it because we expected to piss the league. Well done Blues 💙 #BCFC

@1981marc: Can we just take moment to confirm the fact we have 108 points with a game to go. Money aside, you need to assemble a side with a gaffer In his first managers job. It’s ridiculous.

@afanperspective: We play the perfect way for a team that is winning 1/2 nil – patience is key. Great inswinging corner & finish by Lairdo. Superb pass by Allsop/unselfish by @KeshMan_ & always happy to see what’s it all about @alfiemay 🎵 score. 108 points – wow! 🎊 Cambridge (A) #BCFC #KRO

@colintattum: Historic. Incredible. With still another record to claim… happening here and now, as we live and breathe; embrace and FEA, the naysayers, as this may never happen again. Never seen a team control and dictate a league such, like a cat toying with a mouse and then some 👏💙 #BCFC

@LukeD_BCFC: Another record broken! I was surprised at how comfortable that was but an excellent performance nonetheless. Defence solid as always and I thought Leonard and Willumsson were brilliant, especially in the first half. Let’s end the season on a high at Cambridge 🔵⚪️ #bcfc

@Andyford1875: I don’t care what people say about spending money blah blah blah, this takes some serious doing regardless of who you are and to do it with a game to spare makes it even better, win Saturday to make it 111 and no one is ever beating that!🌟 #bcfc

All time points record secured (108)
Most wins in a season secured (33)
2 records that may never be broken for a long time, if ever.
What a truly remarkable season following the blues 💙 #bcfc pic.twitter.com/BuPTuJ2OJw
