The curfew, initially imposed to curb rising tensions, will remain in force from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am, according to a statement issued by Interior Minister Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak.

In addition to the curfew, authorities reaffirmed a ban on the movement of motorbikes and tricycles, locally known as aboboyaa, within the area. The minister warned that individuals violating the ban would face arrest and prosecution, emphasizing strict enforcement. “Anyone, man or woman, found riding these vehicles will be held accountable under the law,” the statement read.

The measures, backed by the Upper East Regional Security Council and formalized through an executive instrument, also prohibit carrying arms, ammunition, or wearing traditional smocks, which officials say could conceal weapons. Violators risk immediate legal action. Minister Mubarak urged community leaders, youth groups, and residents to prioritize dialogue and peaceful engagement to avoid further escalation.

Government officials described the restrictions as necessary to safeguard lives and restore lasting peace to Binduri, a region grappling with recurrent unrest. While acknowledging the inconvenience caused, the Interior Ministry stressed that the rules aim to prevent violence and protect vulnerable populations.

This move reflects a broader pattern in Ghana’s conflict-prone regions, where authorities often impose temporary security measures to de-escalate tensions. Analysts note that such steps, while critical for immediate stability, require complementary efforts to address underlying grievances through community engagement and socio-economic initiatives. The effectiveness of these measures in Binduri will depend on sustained cooperation between security forces, local leaders, and residents to foster trust and long-term reconciliation.
