On Saturday, former Arizona State star BJ Freeman announced his intention to enter the transfer portal once it officially opens.

Freeman was an integral piece of squad for the bulk of the season until he was dismissed from the program due to conduct detrimental to the team.

In 2024-25, Freeman saw action in 25 games, averaging 28.7 minutes per night. He posted 13.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game on 42.1% shooting from the field in his first year with the Sun Devils. Previously, Freeman was the leading scorer at Milwaukee, averaging 21.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game.

Coming out of Moravian Prep, Freeman was unranked by most major recruiting services. Just a few seasons later, he worked his way into a four-star transfer portal product on 247Sports, checking in as the 137th-ranked player in the portal and the 22nd-ranked player at his position.

“The Arizona State Sun Devils are no strangers to playing shorthanded, and they’ll be doing so once again as B.J. Freeman did not travel with the team as the Sun Devils are set to square off against Kansas State,” the Arizona Republic’s Michelle Gardner wrote. “An ASU representative said Freeman is no longer with the program.”

Prior to his dismissal from the team, Freeman had been ejected from two different games and suspended once for conduct detrimental to the team.

It goes without saying that there is some baggage there, but if the right coach can unlock his game, Freeman can be a true difference-maker.
