Bhutan’s Department of Tourism has announced the launch of a new twice-weekly flight service between Paro and Dubai, operated by Drukair, which will begin in October 2024. The new route is part of Bhutan’s efforts to improve its international connectivity, facilitating easier travel between the country and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Dubai, an international transit hub, provides connections for travellers from Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East. The introduction of this route is expected to increase accessibility to Bhutan for international tourists, as well as strengthen trade and diplomatic relations with the UAE.

Alongside the flight service, Bhutan has introduced an airfare subsidy to encourage international tourism. Visitors who pay the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) in USD will receive a 25 per cent discount on Drukair and Bhutan Airlines flights. The discount is available for travel between December 2024 and August 2025, during the months of December, January, February, June, July, and August.

The airfare subsidy is part of Bhutan’s broader strategy to promote sustainable tourism while making travel to the country more affordable for international visitors. The initiative is expected to support the country’s tourism sector and provide economic benefits to local communities.

Damcho Rinzin, Director of the Department of Tourism, stated, “The Dubai route will improve Bhutan’s global connectivity, and the airfare subsidy will offer an affordable travel option for international tourists, while supporting our sustainable tourism goals.”
