Best time to visit Morocco: When is the best month to travel, how to avoid crowds, cheapest prices, and everything to know | Explainer - 9Travel
Bold, bustling and beautiful, Morocco is one of those incredible places everyone has to visit at least once in their life.
From the vast Sahara Desert to the charming chaos of the markets and winding streets of the medinas, this North African country celebrates Berber, Arabian and European cultural influences.
Locals are famous for their inviting warmth and hospitality, which is why so many Aussies are making Morocco one of their bucket list destinations.
While Morocco is a year-round destination, weather can play an important part in how comfortable you are during your travels.
The country's diverse geography includes everything from the Sahara Desert to the Atlas Mountains and popular beach cities such as Agadir and Essaouira, with each season bringing its own benefits.
However, generally the most popular time to visit is around the early spring months of March to April, or the milder autumn period of September to November.
For those that love the heat, visiting in Morocco's summer months will see you exposed to temperatures of 37 degrees on average (and up to 45 degrees in the desert), with July and August the hottest months. The payoff of visiting during this time is that it's also when there's minimal rainfall.
Travelling on a tight budget? Cash-conscious holidaygoers should book their trip for the low season months of May to September.
The positives are you'll pay less for transport and accommodation, along with less crowds to contend with for a slower, more relaxed holiday.
The downside is that these months are the hottest times to visit, so if you're not a fan of the heat, aim to book around May to June before the temperatures really start to soar.
If you hate getting your hair wet, avoid visiting during the rainiest months between November to March.
While rainfall does vary between all the regions, it does get particularly wet in the northern part of the country. This includes popular cities such as Chefchaouen, famous for its eye-catching blue buildings.
If you do want to travel during these months, your best bet is to head south as it tends to be much drier.
According to Smartraveller.gov.au, Aussies don't generally need a visa for visits of less than 90 days.
However, they do advise that entry and exit conditions can change at short notice and to contact your nearest Moroccan Embassy for the latest information.
Smartraveller also recommends travellers exercise a "high degree of caution" while travelling in Morocco overall.
Skyscanner reveals the cheapest month to fly from Sydney to Marrakesh is currently in May - and it's important to note there are no direct flights between Australia and Morocco, so be prepared for some stopovers along the way.
If you can spare the annual leave, make sure to book in for a visit for at least a week, if not around 12 days.
This allows plenty of time to make the most of exploring everything from the vibrant souks in Marrakesh, a day trip to the picturesque Atlas Mountains, cruising the surfing town Essaouira, visiting Fez's UNESCO-listed medieval medina and, of course, a trip to the Sahara Desert.
For adventuring in the cities, metered taxis are an easy and popular way to get around. Those on a budget should take advantage of reliable bus and train network that make criss-crossing the country a breeze.
